Four Degrees at Four AM
piece for flute, harp, & piano
Approx. 7 minute duration
Advanced Difficulty
Composed 2014
“This piece was inspired by the sensation of being awake and still at work late into a cold night. It features cold and sharp sonorities, but also warm luscious atmospheres that come from working endlessly on something that inspires passion. Both the flute and harp parts make use of high level extended techniques that enable the chamber group to have a massive sound palette.
This piece was originally written for a premiere performance with an incredible friend of mine who played both harp and piano parts simultaneously. As such even the more commonly performed trio arrangement of this piece has an unusual alternation between flute with piano and flute with harp which makes for a very intimate atmosphere even with two large multiphonic instruments. Both arrangements are included here.
~This piece includes material referenced in my free guide to extended techniques”
